The PR-1 ring laser

The PR-1 laser is a twin of the corresponding "geo-sensor" ring laser that is currently installed at Opinion Flats seismological observatory in California.

The aim of these projects was originally to move towards a field instrument for detection of seismological induced rotations in buildings (in our case the Department of Physics and Astronomy building) and to monitor building motion in collaboration with the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

PR-1 is scheduled for a modification which will result in PR-1-IR, configured with new mirrors it will be used to evaluate the possibility of running ring laser gyros at infrared wavelengths, namely 1.15 μm.
