BibliographyJon Wells finished his PhD in laser spectroscopy of rare earth doped optoelectronic materials in the Physics and Astronomy Dept. at the University of Canterbury in 1997. He spent March 1997 - Feb 1999 as a postdoc in the Optical Materials Research Centre (OMRC) and the Femtosecond Research Centre (FRC) at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (UK) where femtosecond pump-probe techniques were performed with the broad objective of understanding non-radiative processes in near infrared emitters. In March 1999, he moved to the Dutch FELIX free electron laser facility in Nieuwegein as the senior UK facility scientist. Directly responsible to Prof. Carl Pidgeon of Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh), he was charged with the smooth operation of the UK programme at FELIX, maintenance of the UK facilities and collaboration with visiting scientists from approx 15 British Universities. Further to this, he established his own research programmes which utilised around 20% of the available UK beamtime. In close collaboration with Universiteit Utrecht and the University of Canterbury (NZ), an extensive vibrational dynamics programme was developed focusing on ultrafast local mode dynamics in crystals and amorphous materials. From June 2002 until June 2006, he held a lectureship in ultrafast semiconductor physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sheffield, working with Prof(s). Maurice Skolnick and Mark Fox. Whilst at Sheffield he worked on some rather diverse problems in the physics of optoelectronic materials, from degenerate four wave mixing and spin relaxation in wide band gap nitride semiconductor nanostructures, ultrafast switching effects in semiconductor photonic crystals, spin relaxation and polaron dynamics in InGaAs quantum dots and phonon spectroscopy in polymers and amorphous silicon/germanium based alloys. In August 2006, he returned to New Zealand to lead the ring laser group at Canterbury. Ring Laser PublicationsAbout Us | News | People | Facilities | Publications | Vacancies | Live Data |
